UBC Pride collective (Pride UBC)

Description:
  • The UBC Pride Collective (also known as Pride UBC) is a student-led organization that celebrates sex and gender diversity on campus by providing resources, fostering safe spaces, and organising events for 2SLGBTQI+ students.
Accessibility:
  • The Collective provides low-cost access to gender-affirming gear (such as binders, gaffs, and packers) for students facing financial barriers through its Gender Empowerment Store.
  • The Collective has previously offered voice feminization and masculinization training in group settings, facilitated by trained speech pathologists.  To improve cost-based accessibility, these trainings were free, and will continue to be free whenever they are offered.
Community Orientation:
  • The Collective hosts weekly meetings through its Trans and Gender Identities discussion groups, providing peer support for trans and gender-diverse individuals. Previous group topics include intersections of transness and BIPOC identities, experiences with medical and social transition, and childhood experiences of gender-diverse individuals
  • Through the Collective, students have access to a like-minded group of peer supporters throughout their transition. Likewise, students with lived experience in transitioning get an opportunity to share their stories.

Three bridges community health centre (vancouver coastal health)

  • ​Three Bridges Community Health Centre, administered by Vancouver Coastal Health, provides primary care services to individuals who do not have a family doctor, and who may have challenges accessing traditional healthcare services. Those without a primary care provider can self-refer to Three Bridges to receive hormone stabilization and surgical access.
Accessibility:
  • Three Bridges permits self-referral, making it accessible to those who do not have a primary care provider to refer them.
  • Their website outlines clear eligibility requirements, including age, residency, insurance verification, and what types of care the client is interested in.
  • Because the Centre is administered by the provincial health system, wait times are unpredictable, and can vary from person to person. For surgical interventions, clients may wait weeks or months.
Actionability:
  • The goal of the Centre is to provide both primary and gender-affirming care for 2SLGBTQIA+ individuals.
  • Gender-affirming care resources include hormone management, surgical referrals, and pre- and post-operative care.
  • Due to high demand for gender-affirming care, clients are referred to other doctors or specialists for routine maintenance after beginning their treatment at Three Bridges.

Battered Women's support services

Description:
  • Battered Women's Support Services offers a wide range of resources for individuals who are currently facing various types of sexualized and/or intimate partner violence, or are who have experienced violence in the past. Resources include  crisis services, legal advocacy, education, and community outreach programs.
Community Orientation:
  • BWSS offers services to any LGBTQ2S+ or gender-diverse survivors of intimate partner abuse, child sexual abuse, and more. Their services are not limited to cisgender women.
  • They feature services tailored to the needs of visible minorities, including Indigenous, Black, Latinx, and gender-diverse groups.
  • They provide education that prioritizes safety, highlighting how abuse can take place in any intimate relationship (including those with gender-diverse partners).
Actionability:
  • BWSS hosts drop-in clinics, provides legal advocacy and assistance, and a maintains a 24/7 crisis telephone line for survivors of sexualized and/or intimate partner violence.
  • Their website contains a substantial volume of education and advocacy information, links to related services and organisations, and an extensive collection of resources to accommodate a wide range of individual circumstances.

Catherine white holman wellness centre

  • The Catherine White Holman Wellness Centre provides low-barrier wellness and legal services to Two-Spirit, transgender, and gender non-conforming people. Low-barrier services are available to any resident of the B.C., regardless of citizenship or health insurance status.
Community Orientation:
  • The Centre promotes organisations with similar goals through the resources section of their website.
  • They are committed to anti-oppression, and to holding themselves accountable as members of the helping profession.
  • They accept community feedback on their service, and aim to continually improve the service they offer. 
Accessibility:
  • The Centre offers services to any resident of the province, regardless of citizenship or health insurance. For those facing financial barriers, services are offered free of charge
  • They provide legal support for changing names and gender markers on government documentation.
  • They provide counselling resources, including assessments for hormone readiness and ADHD diagnoses.
  • Their website is WCAG-compliant, and features a high-contrast viewing option.

Gender Surgery Clinic at Gordon and Leslie Diamond Health Care Centre (vancouver general hospital)

  • The Gender Surgery Clinic at Gordon and Leslie Diamond Health Care Centre is located on the main campus of Vancouver General Hospital. It houses the Gender Surgery Program B.C., which is the only program in Western Canada performing gender-affirming genital reconstruction surgery (i.e., "bottom surgery").
Clarity:
  • The Gender Surgery Clinic only performs gender-affirming surgical procedures; no other types of gender-affirming treatment (e.g., hormone replacement therapy) are provided.
  • They present stepwise guides towards achieving a desired outcome of transition, and offer multiple surgical consultations over the course of a person's transition. 
  • Because the Clinic is administered by the provincial health system, wait times are unpredictable, and can vary from person to person. Clients may wait weeks or months before receiving surgical intervention.
Actionability:
  • They are the only centre in Western Canada performing “bottom surgery”. As part of their consulting they provide referral for other types of care.

QMUNITY

  • QMUNITY is a non-profit organisation that provides a wide variety of programs and services to 2SLGBTQIA+ individuals in the Lower Mainland. It is located in the historic West End neighborhood of downtown Vancouver.
Community:
  • The QMUNITY website lists programming and services for 2SLGBTQIA+ youth, adults, and seniors in the Vancouver area, along  with relevant contact information.
  • They offer youth supports for people age 25 and below, including peer support in one-on-one and group settings.
  • They offer older adult and senior supports, including intra- and interpersonal development, and opportunities for community connection.
  • QMUNITY provides low-barrier counselling, with transparent pricing and wait times, and peer support groups relating to a wide variety of issues.
  • In partnership with YWCA Metro Vancouver, they operate Prism Employment Support Service, providing strengths-based and trauma-informed employment support to Canadian citizens, permanent residents, and protected refugees who identify as 2SLGBTQIA+.
  • They host the a twice-monthly Trans ID Clinic, for assistance in changing names and gender markings on legal documentation, including identity documents.
Accessibility:
  • The QMUNITY website is filled with direct links, contacts for affiliated services, and a blog featuring current queer news.
  • Many featured services have a combination of in-person and online option, and try to be transparent about wait times for accessing services.

Gender Surgery Program B.C. (Vancouver Coastal Health)

  • The Gender Surgery Program B.C., is part of the Gender Surgery Clinic at Gordon and Leslie Diamond Health Care Center, located on the main campus of Vancouver General Hospital. Administered by Vancouver Coastal Health, the Program provides information on gender-affirming surgery, such as what procedures are available, and clear steps on how to obtain them. Additional resources include surgery referral forms and workbooks describing procedures and recovery.
Actionability:

BC Children’s Hospital Gender Clinic

Description:
  • The​ BC Children's Hospital Gender Clinic works in partnership with Trans Care BC and the BC Transgender Clinical Care Group to provide endocrine care (including puberty blockers and cross-hormone therapy) to youth. A referral from the youth's doctor is required for enrolment.
Actionability:
  • The Clinic provides gender-affirming endocrine care (such as hormone replacement therapy) for gender-diverse youth.
  • They accept youth up until their 17th birthday, and provide treatment until they turn 19. After this, they provide referrals, so that youth can continue their treatment as adults.
  • They require readiness assessments from mental health professionals to guide treatment. ​
Clarity:
  • The Clinic specializes in helping youth determine a long-term goals and plans for transition.
  • They provide and help fill out necessary care forms for further services as part of their referral, for whenever youth age out of the program.
